Best Sunscreens for Men

Chances are, you’re not using enough sunscreen. You’re probably also not applying sunscreen as often as you should. Even if you’re just sitting at your desk doing work or going for a drive, your skin is constantly being exposed to harmful UV rays from the sun (which can even pass through windows).

Studies have shown that even the blue light from your computer screen or phone can contribute to skin damage. UVA rays, in particular, though, cause premature aging and increase the risk of skin cancer. This is why it’s so important to wear sunscreen year-round, even when it’s cold and cloudy outside.

Interestingly, sunscreen is often thought of as a “beauty” product, which means some men might want to avoid it altogether (thinking, perhaps, that beauty products are “only for women”). However, protecting your skin has nothing to do with appearances or the traditional notions of “manliness.”

Wearing sunscreen is simply a wise, protective habit that everyone, regardless of gender, should try to adopt. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the U.S., and, unfortunately, men face a higher risk of both developing and dying from it. For this reason, it may actually be especially important for men to wear sunscreen.

With so many available sunscreen options today, finding a product that works for you is more complicated than ever. In this article, we’ll go over the best types of sunscreen for men, what makes them effective, and why it’s so important for men to wear sunscreen (and practice skincare in general). Let’s get started!

Why Should Men Wear Sunscreen?

A lot of men don’t think to include sunscreen in their daily skincare routine — assuming they have any sort of skincare routine (i.e. using grooming products or everyday lotion). This probably has to do with daily habits: women may apply sunscreen as part of their skincare or makeup routine, while men might see it as an extra, unnecessary step.

One common misconception is that sun protection products are strictly “beauty” products. However, skin protection is important for everyone. Men are more likely to develop skin cancer, and statistics suggest that they are at higher risk of dying from skin-related cancers.

Certain biological and lifestyle factors may make men more vulnerable to skin damage from the sun. Men tend to sweat more than women, which can cause their sunscreen to wear off faster. Plus, men’s skin is often thicker and less fatty than women’s. This means it’s potentially more susceptible to UV damage.

The Benefits of Sunscreen for Men

There are lots of benefits (other than just preventing sunburn) that come with using sunscreen every day, no matter what your gender is. Let’s take a closer look at these benefits below:

Protection from harmful UV rays

The most significant benefit of wearing sunscreen is that it protects your skin from UVA and UVB rays, which can damage skin cells and lead to issues like cancer and premature aging. A broad-spectrum sunscreen is the best choice because it protects against both UVA rays (which age the skin) and UVB rays (which cause sunburn).

Preventing premature aging

UVA rays can cause wrinkles, fine lines, and dark spots since they slowly break down collagen in the skin. Daily sunscreen use is necessary because it helps preserve your skin’s youthful appearance and protects it from these long-term effects.

Reduced skin cancer risk

For men (especially those who work outside), using sunscreen is particularly important. Regularly using sunscreen will be the best way to lower the risk of getting various skin cancers — including melanoma, which can be deadly if it’s not detected early.

Preventing sunburn and skin sensitivity

Even if you don’t burn easily, you should always apply sunscreen before going outside. This will be the best way to protect your skin from getting sunburnt (which is always unpleasant). It’ll also prevent your skin from becoming overly sensitive and irritated because of too much sun exposure.

What Should You Look for in a Sunscreen?

When picking out a sunscreen that’s specifically for men, there are a few things you’ll want to take into consideration. Let’s break it down below:

Broad-spectrum coverage

Make sure that the sunscreen provides broad-spectrum protection (i.e. protection against UVA and UVB rays). UVA rays and UVB rays are both harmful, and UVA rays in particular will penetrate deeply and cause signs of aging. Once again, UVB rays are the main cause of sunburn and could contribute to skin cancer.

SPF 30 or higher

SPF (Sun Protection Factor) is a measure of how well a sunscreen protects against UVB rays. Dermatologists generally recommend choosing a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 for daily use.

Water resistance

Especially if you sweat a lot, water-resistant sunscreen will last longer. However, you should keep in mind that no sunscreen is completely waterproof. You’ll still need to reapply it every 2-3 hours (especially if you’re swimming or working out in the sun).

Separate sunscreen for your face

A lot of people find it helpful to have a separate sunscreen for their face. Facial sunscreens are often lighter and less greasy. This means they’re less likely to clog your pores or cause skin irritation (which is great news for men with sensitive skin).

Different Types of Sunscreen for Men

The two main types of sunscreen are mineral sunscreen (or physical sunscreen) and chemical sunscreen. Mineral sunscreens typically contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, and sit on the skin’s surface to reflect UV rays.

Chemical sunscreens, on the other hand, absorb into the skin and transform UV rays into heat, which is then released from the skin. Both are effective, but mineral sunscreens can be less irritating for people with sensitive skin.

Sunscreen also comes in a lot of different forms. Admittedly, this can make matters a bit confusing. Let’s talk about the different types and forms of sunscreen for men below:

Sprays

Sprays are great because they’re easy to apply, especially on larger areas of the body. However, you should make sure to apply enough and rub it in properly.

Creams and lotions

Lotions (which have a creamy texture) are a classic option. Many face-specific lotions and lip balms have extra benefits (like moisturizing ingredients, for example) which will help keep your skin looking and feeling smooth.

Gels

Gel sunscreens are a good choice for people with oily skin or acne-prone skin. This form or sunscreen won’t feel too heavy on your skin, either.

Powders

Powder sunscreen can be convenient if you need to do quick touch-ups, especially on your face. While powders may not be all that suitable for full-body application, they’re a great option if you need to quickly reapply sunscreen throughout the day while working outside.

Light Therapy for Sun-Damaged Skin

If you already have sun-damaged skin, you might want to consider doing light therapy. Light therapy can reduce the appearance of dark spots as well as any other signs of aging caused by sun exposure. Blue light therapy can even help with acne, so you should definitely consider doing light therapy treatments if you have acne-prone skin.

Light therapy devices like LED masks make light therapy more accessible because they allow you to do light therapy treatments at home. All you have to do is use the light therapy device for 15 minutes daily. It may take some time to see results, but most people agree that it’s well worth it.

Tips for Sunscreen Use and Skin Care for Men

Most men aren’t taught how to use sunscreen properly. Here are some tips for men who are relatively new to using sunscreen regularly:

Apply sunscreen generously

Most people don’t use enough sunscreen. About a teaspoon for the face and an ounce (roughly a shot glass full) for the body will usually be enough.

Don’t forget your ears and neck

People often forget to apply sunscreen to their ears, neck, back of their hands, and feet. Men who are balding should apply sunscreen to their scalp as well.

Reapply regularly

Sunscreen wears off after two hours, and even sooner if you’re sweating a lot. Keep a bottle with you for reapplication throughout the day if possible.

Remember that sunscreen isn’t seasonal

The sun’s rays can damage your skin even on cloudy days, so it’s important to wear sunscreen year-round.

Use other protective measures

Wearing hats, sunglasses, and protective clothing is always a good idea because they can provide extra layers of sun protection (especially if you’re spending a lot of time outside).

Conclusion

As you can see, wearing sunscreen isn’t just important — it’s necessary, no matter what your gender is. For men who may be hesitant to practice proper skincare, sunscreen should be the first step.

There are plenty of options out there when it comes to sunscreen for men, so don’t worry. As long as you’re wearing sunscreen regularly, that’s what’s most important! If you’re interested in learning more about sunscreen, the effects of aging, and light therapy, feel free to check out our blog.
